5 cops, 2 bank guards killed in Kulgam attack

Five policemen and two bank security guards were killed in an attack on a cash van of the J&K Bank in Kulgam district on Monday.

South Kashmir Range Deputy Inspector General of Police SP Pani said the militants, who had laid a nakka near Pombai village, stopped the van and fired at it indiscriminately, killing the policemen and the bank guards.

A police officer requesting anonymity said three to four masked gunmen in army fatigues carried out the attack on the van as they had already been tipped off about the presence of policemen in the vehicle. "The militants signaled to the driver to stop and presuming them to be soldiers he stopped the vehicle. Then militants fired at them," he said.

The militants also took away the service rifles of the deceased policemen identified as Assistant Sub Inspector Bashir Ahmad son of Abdul Gani Dar of Bonigam Qazigund, Anantnag;  constable Muzafar Ahmad S/o Gul Mohammad Bhat of YK Pora- Qazigund, Anantnag; constable Farooq Ahmad S/o Abdul Aziz of Nehama- DHPora-Kulgam;  constable Ishfaq Ahmad  S/o Abdul Ahad Hajam resident of  Zakoora, Batpora, Srinagar and constable Muhamad Qasim  S/o  Bohu Khan of Trehgam,Kupwara.

The bank security guards Muzaffar Ahmad Laway of Ladgoo-Nehama, DH Pora and Javaid Ahmad Bhat of Batpora-Mohamdpora, Kulgam were working in the chest office of JK Bank Kulgam.

Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kulgam Dr Roshan Din told Greater Kashmir all seven were brought dead to the hospital and had multiple bullet injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, Shabir Ahmad of Bijbehara, escaped unhurt in the attack that occurred on the day the chief secretary BB Vyas and the director general of police SP Vaid held meetings in Anantnag and Kulgam districts.

A Hizb ul Mujahideen spokesman told a news agency that militants killed the policemen only and the bank guards had been shot dead by CRPF troopers.

A JK Bank official told Greater Kashmir that both security guards were wearing uniform, while the driver was in civvies. Chest Officer JK Bank Kulgam Muhamad Ayub said no cash was looted from the van as it had already been deposited at Manzgam branch in DH Pora The dead bodies of the slain cops were later taken to District Police Lines Kulgam.  Senior police officials including Inspector General of Police Kashmir SJM Geelani, SP Pani and SP Kulgam Sridhar Patil participated in the wreath laying ceremony of the slain cops.
