PCI seeks report on thrashing of Sopore journalists
The Press Council of India has initiated suo-moto action in a case of thrashing of journalists by police in north Kashmir's Sopore town on May 5.
Taking cognizance of the matter that came in for severe criticism, the PCI has issued notices to the State Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Senior Superintendent of Police, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla and SHO Sopore, asking them to file their replies. Two journalists were thrashed while some others allegedly abused and chased by police in Sopore on past Friday. The injured journalists, who were removed to a hospital, later submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Baramulla and also met deputy inspector general of police (north Kashmir), seeking action against the guilty officer.
