Some militants reportedly escaped from Shuhama area in Ganderbal district on Monday after a brief exchange of fire with forces during a cordon-and-search operation (CASO), the police said.

According to a police official, army's 5 Rashtriya Rifles, Jammu and Kashmir police and Central Reserve Police Force jointly cordoned off Warpow area in Shuhama, after "inputs" about the presence of some militants there.

"As the cordon was being laid, suspected militants opened fire on forces which was retaliated for a brief period of time," the official said.

Superintendent of police Ganderbal Muhammad Khalil Poswal told Greater Kashmir the area being residential, the forces "exercised maximum caution."

"There was a brief exchange of fire initially and then the searches were carried out. However the operation concluded without any recoveries in the evening," he said.

Poswal said that militants might have escaped taking advantage of the residential area during the initial exchange of fire.
