Militants on Saturday managed to escape after exchanging fire with the government forces in Tangpawa village in Kokernag area of Anantnag district.
A source said that around 1 a.m, a joint team of army andpolice launched cordon-and-search operation in Tangpawa following"credible" input about the presence of militants in the area.
"At around 5 a.m, as the joint team of forces closed in onthe suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering abrief exchange of fire," he said.
He said there was a sudden pause in firing and the forcestightened the cordon, launched searches but found nothing.
The police official said that militants apparently hadmanaged to escape.
"The forces then launched search operation in the nearby Hillad village suspecting that the militants might have taken shelter there. But after sometime the operation was called off," he said.
