3 militants killed in Handwara: Army
Army today said that it has scuttled a major infiltration bid and killed three militants in an ongoing gun-battle in Nowgam sector of Handwara in Kupwara district.
An army officer said that soldiers guarding the line of control (LoC) intercepted a group of five to six militants who were trying to sneak into this side of the fence near Jati area at Toot Mari Gali (TMG), some 35 kms from Handwara town, early this morning.
He said the soldiers of 35 Rashtriya Rifles manning the fence challenged the militants who opened fire, which was retaliated, triggering a gun-battle between two sides.
Soon reinforcement of 18 JAT and 1st Naga units of army were rushed to the area who joined the operation.
Srinagar-based Defence spokesman Col. N. N Joshi told Greater Kashmir: "Three militants have been killed so far and their bodies were recovered from the encounter site. Two bodies were recovered earlier in the day and third one was traced in the afternoon."
"Operation in the area is continuing," Joshi informed.
