At least five persons sustained pellet injuries in clashes with government forces that erupted alongside a brief exchange of fire between militants and the forces in Shopian on Wednesday.
It was learnt that a joint team of 23 PARA commandos, CRPF and police launched a search operation in orchards falling between the villages of Jamnagri and Reshnagri in Shopian.
Militants believed to be hiding in one of the orchards fired at the approaching forces before escaping.
Eyewitnesses said that as the first gun shots were heard in the area, a throng of locals rushed towards the orchards and started throwing stones at the forces.
The forces resorted to pellet firing and teargas shelling, injuring five youths, they said.
An official at the district hospital Shopian, however, said two youths with minor pellet injuries were admitted to the hospital.
Meanwhile, clashes between youth and government forces also broke out in Meemender area of Shopian .
In Kamla forest area of Tral, two to three militants opened fire on the army's 42 Rashtriya Rifles on Wednesday morning, a police officer said, requesting anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
"The army troopers returned the fire triggering a brief firefight. The militants taking advantage of the dense forest managed to escape from the spot," he said.
He said the militants couldn't be located even after the daylong search operation by the army, police and the CRPF.
