55 houses damaged in Gurez avalanche

At least 55 residential houses were damaged after an avalanche hit Khandiyal village of Gurez Valley in Bandipora district last night.

An official said that at least 27 houses were completely damaged after the avalanche hit the area at around 9:30 pm.

   

He said around 28 houses were partially damaged while seven cowsheds, a government primary school, two anganwari centers, three PDC buildings, and four shops were also damaged due to the avalanche.

He said the village is located about 5km from main Dawar tehsil of Gurez.

“Several vehicles have also been damaged,” he said.

Assistant commissioner revenue Bandipora Reyaz Ahmad Beigh said the incident took place late last night in Khandiyal and a team of revenue officials has been deputed to assess the damages.

“Relief and rescue operation is still underway,” he said.

He said the administration would provide all possible assistance to the affected families. 

A minor avalanche also hit the Habba Khatoon Sumo stand in Dawar, damaging its fencing.
