Barely two days after four soldiers including an army major were killed in an encounter at northern Bandipora district, the northern army commander Lt Gen Ranbir Singh reviewed security situation in Kashmir. The army commander visited restive South Kashmir and took the firsthand account of the prevailing security situation.
A defence spokesman said that the army commander arrived in Srinagar on a two day visit to the Kashmir. "The visit is to review the prevailing security situation in the wake of recent counter infiltration and counter militancy operations which led to elimination of many militants," he said in a statement.
Accompanied by the GoC 15 Corps Lt Gen AK Bhatt, the army commander visited the hinterland formations in South Kashmir and was briefed by the commanders on ground about the current situation.
"The Army commander complimented the troops for their recent successes and commended them for their dedication to duty and high standards of professionalism," the spokesman said. He said that General Singh was appreciative of the measures and Standard Operating Procedures instituted by the units and formations to minimise civilian causalities.
"The need to be prepared for effectively meeting emerging security challenges was also reinforced. Lauding the excellent synergy amongst all the security forces, he exhorted all ranks to maintain a safe, secure and peaceful environment for the people of the Kashmir," the spokesman said.
Later in the day, GoC-in-C met Governor NN Vohra at Raj Bhavan and also attended security review meeting chaired by the Governor. "He also interacted with officials from other security agencies and civil administration," he said.
Meanwhile, Army Commander, Northern Command Lt Gen Ranbir Singh met Governor N N Vohra at Raj Bhavan today.
Governor and Army Commander had extensive discussions to review issues relating to internal and external security management, particularly the recent past pattern of infiltration attempts across the LoC.
Today's meeting is in furtherance of periodic security reviews at Governor-Army Commander level.
