Avalanche death toll 11 in southern Kashmir

Rescue teams recovered on Saturday the body of selection grade constable Parvaiz Ahmad near Jawahar Tunnel in Kulgam district, where a snow avalanche on Thursday hit a police post, trapping 10 persons.

Two policemen were rescued and bodies of five policemen, including that of Parvaiz, and three prisoners were extricated since Friday.

   

In Anantnag district, two persons died on Thursday evening after an avalanche hit the residential house of Bashir Ahmad Qureshi son of Noor Mohammad Qureshi in SanbradiMagam in Kokernag area of the district. Rescuers had tried hard to rescue Bashir’s wife Roshan Begum.

Earlier, officials said they had rescued two of the family members. But local residents said no one from the local administration took part in rescue.

“When the incident took place we immediately contacted SHO Kokernag, helpline established by DC Office Anantnag but till late night no team either from police or any other department reached here. It was only the locals who saved two children and retrieved dead bodies,” said Yousuf Rashid, a local resident.

Another avalanche death occurred in Mati forest area in Vailoo, Kokernag. The deceased, 28-year-old Bashir Ahmed Awan, a resident of BidihardLarnoo of Anantnag district, had gone to the forest to collect firewood.
