Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) drew a blank in Ladakh as Congress swept all 13 municipal committees of Leh and won five in Kargil. Eight other Kargil committees went to independent candidates. Earlier, BJP gained an upper hand in Leh after winning 17 of the 24 seats of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh. Congress had managed only four seats. It could manage only one seat in the LAHDC, Kargil, where NC and Congress formed a coalition.

The BJP had also won the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 from Ladakh constituency, the lone seat in the region, by dislodging Congress, but Congress won three of the four assembly seats in the region. One went to an independent candidate.
