At the time of covid-19 pandemic, number of blood donations has reduced to a very low level with the practice of social distancing and cancellation of blood donation drives. Every second, a patient needs a blood transfusion. Maintaining adequate levels of our nation’s blood supply is critical and requires a steady supply of donors who generously donate millions of units to save precious lives.

Myths and Taboos related to covid-19 and blood donation

   

Can blood donation be done at the time of covid-19 pandemic?

Surely, you can. But don’tconceal your history especially about travel in past 28 days and history of flulike illness during medical check-up before blood donation.

Is it safe to donate blood at blood center?

Yes, because blood donationcenters can facilitate safe donation as they are skilled in infection controlpractices. But don’t go in groups, avoid crowding, use face mask and handsanitizers. Mass gathering at donor waiting room and refreshment room should beavoided.

Does blood donation decrease immunity of a donor?

No, blood donation doesn’tdecrease immunity rather it helps you to save three lives at a time.

Is any blood group moresusceptible to covid-19?

Having blood group O doesnot mean you will not catch covid-19 just because you are more resistant tothis virus, rather follow proper guidelines issued by authorities. And bloodgroup A will surely be effected by covid. Take precautions, you will be safe.

Is my blood tested for coronavirus?

Mode of transmission isdroplets or aerosol, not blood. There have been no reported cases oftransfusion transmitted covid-19 till date. It is not required to screen bloodfor coronavirus in blood centers till now.

If I had flu like symptomsafter donation, should I inform blood center?

Yes, please let’s knowwithin 48 hrs to 14 days after donating your blood.

How can I help this bloodshortage at the time of pandemic?
