The body of a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant was recovered from paddy fields of Devbugh area of Tangmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Saturday, police said. The slain militant was identified as Fayaz Ahmed Bhat of Wailoo area of Pattan.
The killing, according to witnesses, triggered clashes in north Kashmir areas including Palhalan while Pattan area observed a complete shutdown against it.
Witnesses said the body of Bhat was found in paddy fields at Devbugh in Kunzar area of Tangmarg on Saturday morning. "The body in army fatigue was spotted by locals who refused to hand it over to police," they said.
"Fayaz's body was bullet-riddled. It was later shifted to district hospital Baramulla for postmortem."
Station House Officer of Kunzar police station Abdul Hamid said they got a call from locals at around 7:30 am about the body. "We immediately rushed the spot and found a male body in army fatigue lying on a link road at Devbugh," he said.
He said the slain person was later identified as Fayaz Ahmed Bhat of Wailoo, Pattan. "No arms or any ammunition was found at the spot," he said.
Police said Fayaz was active militant of Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit.
As the news of Fayaz's killing spread in Pattan—his native town—youth took to the streets at Palhallan and resorted to stone-pelting on government forces.
As per reports, shutdown was also observed in Kunzar, Bhobiwan, Duroo, Chandiloora, and other areas.
"Youth fought pitched battles with CRPF at Kunzar and Chandiloora. The clashes were on till late in the evening," they said.
