BSF shoots dead ‘intruder’ on Jammu border

The Border Security Force on Thursday shot dead an “intruder” and foiled an infiltration bid along the International Border in Jammu district this morning, a senior officer said.

He said that the BSF troops observed some suspicious movement of two to three people along the international border near Nikowal border outpost (BoP) in Arnia area at around 5.45 am.

“The troops tried to stop them but opened fire when they tried to escape,” the officer said.

One of them was shot dead while others managed to escape, he said.

Meanwhile, the BSF said that retaliating to “unprovoked” firing from the Pakistani side in Samba in which a BSF man was killed on Wednesday, it destroyed two Pakistani posts later in the day.

“Two Pakistani mortar positions were located, targeted and destroyed by BSF yesterday night only. The coordinated precision fire of BSF silenced the Pakistani guns,” a BSF spokesman said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the BSF said that it has launched “operation alert” along the over 200-km-long international border in Jammu and Kashmir to “curb the increasing movement of infiltrating militants from across the border.”

“There are inputs that there is movement of militants and accordingly, we have declared ‘Ops Alert’ on the border,” inspector general of BSF (Jammu frontier), Ram Awatar told reporters here.

The BSF said that it gave a military send off to head constable Radha Pada Hazara, who was killed in alleged sniper firing by Pakistan rangers along the IB in Samba yesterday.

J&K director general of police Shesh Paul Vaid, IGP Jammu zone and Dr SD Singh attended the ceremony along with the IG BSF Jammu Ram Awtar and other senior officers and soldiers of the BSF.

“It is because of that alertness that they have acted like that (resorting to sniper firing). The morale of the BSF is high and will continue to remain high,” the IG said.

He said that the effort of the BSF is to maintain peace along the border, but alleged that Pakistan is always trying to disturb this peace.

He said that one intruder was killed in RS Pura on Thursday.

“There was movement under thick cover of fog and one intruder was spotted well inside Indian territory and he was fired upon and shot dead. He was resident of Sialkot district (of Pakistan). It was an infiltration attempt,” the officer said.

Either he was a member of the infiltration group or their guide, he said.

Speaking to reporters, Vaid said that “those who are thinking they have done good by murder of humanity, need to introspect. Our forces are capable of giving them a befitting reply.” PTI
