Bullet-riddled body of woman found in Shopian

The police Friday said it launched a probe into the killing of a woman in southern Shopian district after a purported video of the incident went viral on social networking sites.

The bullet-riddled body of the woman—reportedly a maternal cousin of slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Zeenat-ul-Islam—was found in Draggad village of the district.

   

Zeenat was killed along with his associate in a gunfight with forces on January 13 this year in southern Kulgam district.

A police source said the woman was abducted and later shot dead at Cherbagh area of Draggad.

A police official identified the slain woman as Ishrat Muneer (25) daughter of Muneer Ahmad Dar of Dangerpora, Pulwama.

Earlier, a 10-second purported video of the woman’s killing was also released on social media by unknown persons, wherein she is seen pleading for mercy with folded hands, before being shot at from point-blank range.

Ishrat’s body was taken to her native village, where she was laid to rest.

Soon after the incident, the authorities snapped internet service across Shopian district.

The police said it has registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated investigation into the incident.

The police investigation is focused on “some credible leads” and it is expected that the culprits shall be brought before the law soon, a police spokesman said.
