National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), an institute of design, management and technology, set up in 1986 under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India has started its admission process for the year 2017 in the four year bachelors and two year masters programmes.

Since 1986, NIFT has played a pioneering role in envisioning and evolving fashion and industrial business education in the country. Through its network of sixteen professionally managed Campuses, it has played a leadership role in catalyzing the Indian fashion industry in adopting new design methodologies, manufacturing technologies and merchandising practices.

NIFT offers Bachelor of Design with specialization in Accessory Design, Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Knitwear Design, Leather Design, Textile Design for the students of 10+2 in any stream & Apparel Production (B.F.Tech.) for students from non-medical stream.

NIFT also offers Master of Design & Master of Fashion Management for the students being Graduate in any discipline and MF Tech for BE/ BTech/ BFTech degree holders. There are also different Continuing Education Programmes (CEP) with duration varied from one month to one year for 10th and 12th standard candidates.

NIFT Srinagar is one of the newly established Campus where two popular Bachelor of Design programmes: Fashion Design (FD) and Fashion Communication (FC) have been started from this year. 

NIFT Campus Srinagar is well equipped with latest techno-equipments with best quality infrastructure with Garment Construction & Pattern-Making lab, Photography & Apple Mac lab and highly professional staff. There are 35 percent seats reserved in FD and FC courses for the domicile candidates of the state of J&K. Thus, out of 36 seats in each course, 13 seats are reserved for students being the domicile of J&K based on merit and 23 seats will be filled from all India rank. In case seats of domicile quota remain vacant, upto 7 seats may be converted to non domicile so that batch size remains 30. 

There is also opportunity for topper students to study their 5th Semester as an exchange programme of ENSAIT International at Roubaix France, scheduled from January to June every year. The degrees awarded by the Institute are recognized by the academia worldwide. NIFT prepares students to produce solutions nearly to any challenge within the fashion domain. Over the years, the institute has emerged as a hub of innovation in the realm of design, management and technology. 

Detailed overview of two programmes conducted from Srinagar campus: 

Bachelor of Fashion Design: The Fashion Design (FD) Department has been instrumental in bringing about a paradigm shift in design perception in India. The four year programme has been designed in such a way that it works closely with fashion professionals so as to evolve a distinctive and exceptional fashion identity. The students are trained to anticipate and address relevant concerns and issues. A logical, sequential, hands-on experience enables students to conceptualize designs, make patterns, drape and construct garments of impeccable quality. 

Study Areas: The students are exposed to international trends and forecasting to remain updated with the international fashion and are taught to remain rooted through craft cluster projects. They are exposed to the business, merchandising and marketing side of the fashion business, to become entrepreneurs. The areas of study includes Design process, Draping, Pattern making, Elements of Textiles & Design, Craft Cluster study, Entrepreneur development, CAD, Design collection, Visual merchandising, Portfolio development, etc.

The FD department maintains a garment construction and pattern making & draping labs stoked with modern electric direct drive machines, steam iron, double needed lock stitch, four thread lock stitch and specialized pattern making tables. These labs are the breeding ground for heightened creativity, unique approach and innovative prospective' in relation to garment making. 

Scope: There were 80 percent of students placed by different recruiting companies with 3.8 Lakhs as an average salary for the year 2016. The programme prepares students to pursue careers as Designers, Stylists, Freelance Design Consultants, Design Managers, Pattern Engineers, Illustrators, Fashion Trend Forum Organizers, Assistant Professors and Entrepreneurs. The star alumni Designers of NIFT in Fashion Design are; Manish Arora, Ritu Beri, Gaurav Gupta, Nida Mahmood, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Ashish Soni, etc.

Bachelor of Fashion Communication: Fashion Communication (FC) is a four year popular course that enables students to acquire communication skills pertinent to the Fashion and Lifestyle industry. With a multitude of prey and luxury brands mushrooming in the Indian retail scenario, FC has become essential for each one of them to develop a unique brand identity for maximum impact in the domain of Fashion and Lifestyle. Thus 'Fashion Communication' forms the core of the whole business of Fashion.

Study Areas: One of the newest and most exciting avenues in the industry, FC encompasses integrated course study relating with areas such as; Graphic Design, Fashion Journalism, Visual Merchandising, Photography, Advertising, Calligraphy, Public Relations, Styling, Writing Skills, Exhibition Design, Publication Design, Multimedia, Consumer Behavior in Fashion, Communication Concepts & processes, Craft Cluster & Documentation and Space Design.

The FC department maintains a photography and Apple Mac labs that includes the most advanced hard wares. 

Scope: There were 90 percent of students placed by different recruiting companies with 4.8 Lakhs as an average salary for the year 2016. The programme prepares students to pursue careers as Graphic Designers, Photography, Visual Merchandisers, Fashion Journalists, Cartoonist, Design Managers, Publication Managers, Assistant Professors, etc. The star alumni of NIFT in Fashion Communication are; Divya Narang (Tanshq), Alpi Boylla (FDCI), Amandeep Kaur (Marie Claire), Mahelaqua Alam (Samsung), Pooja Saxena (Apple, USA), Priyanka Misra (Harper's Bazaar).

Admissions 2017: The admission to all Graduate and Master Programmes being offered by NIFT will be through online registration which is open from 2nd November, 2016 to 10th January, 2017 on the NIFT official website linkhttps://applyadmission.net/NIFT2017 and Foreign Nationals, SAARC and NRI candidates may apply online at https://applyadmission.net/NIFTNRI2017.

The admission is based on a Written Entrance Examination to be held on 12th February, 2017 at different Centres throughout India followed by Situation Test/ Group Discussion/ Interview. The declaration of final result will be online on the end of May, 2017.
