Crimes against women on rise in J&K

J&K has witnessed an increase in crimes against women during the past two years, a report by state Crime Branch (CB) has revealed.

In 2017, at least 3363 cases of atrocities against womenwere registered by police. These included cases of kidnapping, abduction, rape,molestation, dowry, cruelty by husband and other crimes.

In its latest Crime Gazette the CB has said the number ofsuch cases grew to 3623 last year, an increase of 260 cases compared to thesituation in 2017.

In 2018, as per the report, 1602 cases of molestation and354 cases of rape were registered by police across all districts of J&K.The number of rape cases reported in 2017 was 314.

In a worrying trend, 1079 cases of abduction and kidnappingwere registered in 2018, showing an increase of 119 cases, compared to 2017.

Among all the districts of Kashmir, Srinagar has the highestrate of crimes against women. The report says that 500 cases of such crimeshave been reported in the summer capital Srinagar, followed by Jammu (357cases) and Budgam (324 cases).

In Srinagar the cases of molestation and kidnapping havebeen on rise as well, compared to other districts.

The police have registered 266 cases of molestation and 127cases of kidnapping/abduction in the district, the highest among all districtsin Kashmir.

In Baramulla and Anantnag, 245 and 233 cases of crimesagainst women have been respectively registered by police last year.

In Rajouri 182 women lodged complaints of violence againstthem. These include 62 cases of molestation, 29 rape cases, 47 kidnapping casesand 35 cases of cruelty by husband or relatives of husband.

The Police have registered 168 cases of crime against womenin Kulgam including 15 cases of rape, 49 cases of kidnapping and 94 cases ofmolestation. Similarly, 172, 171 and 156 such cases have been reported inSopore, Kupwara and Udhampur respectively while the number of such casesregistered by the police last year is 117, 108, 107 and 105 in Kathua,Ganderbal, Poonch  andAwantiporadistricts.
