Displaced shopkeepers of IG Road seek rehabilitation

Srinagar, June 20: Over 400 dislocated shopkeepers on the IG Road in south city here have sought rehabilitation.

The affected shopkeepers under the banner of Traders Coordination Committee IG Road said, “although the successive governments made tall promises about our rehabilitation, yet no concrete step has so far been taken in this regard.”

"We were assured that we will be rehabilitated in Imam Din Qamar Din (IQ) Shopping Mall at Hyderpora square which was coming up then. When the shopping complex constructed on custodian land was ready, it was leased out by an open bid," they said. The aggrieved appealed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to ensure their rehabilitation on humanitarian grounds.

Pertinently, in January 2002 the then coalition government under a massive demolition drive demolished hundreds of shops dotting IG Road from Humhama to Barzulla.
