Domestic violence against women on decline: Report

The incidences of domestic violence against women have gone down in J&K in the past two years, an official report has highlighted.

The annual report by the Crime Branch (CB) shows that there hasbeen a decrease, though marginal, in cases of domestic violence includingcruelty by husbands and other crimes.

   

In 2017, according to the report, police registered 375cases of domestic violence by husband or relatives of the husband. The numberof such cases dropped to 325 the next year.

In the summer capital of Srinagar, the police registered 103cases of the domestic violence against the women – 52 cases in 2017 and 51cases in 2018 – highest in any district, reads the report.

Similarly, in other districts of Kashmir division there hasbeen decreases in the complaints of domestic violence received by police. InAnantnag and Kupwara districts just 13 cases of domestic violence wereregistered by police in 2018, against 27 cases in 2017.

Similarly, in Kulgam, Ganderbal, Budgam, Pulwama, Shopian,Bandipora and Handwara, the number of cases registered was 84.

In Jammu district the number of domestic violence casesregistered by police has decreased from 64 in 2017 to 34 in 2018.

In the remaining nine districts of the division total numberof domestic violence cases registered in 2018 was 266 – a drop of 24 casescompared to 2017.

The Crime Branch report says that 129 case of eve-teasingwere reported in 2018, showing a decrease of 86 cases compared to 2017.
