Early harvesting of black cumin banned in Gurez

Bandipora, June 24: The authorities have banned early harvesting of black cumin in Gurez in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

An order issued by the executive magistrate first class in Gurez said, “Very often complaints are being received by this office regarding early harvesting of Kala Zeera (black cumin) by locals,” it said. “The early harvesting of black cumin before fruits or seeds attain maturity has led to decrease in its productivity in the recent times.”

The official said that the black cumin was cultivated from Nayal, Khopri, Khandyal, Chorwan, Chuntiwari, Achoora, Dawar, Mastan, Markoot, Badwan, Wanpora and other villages of the valley.

Noting that the black cumin was precious, identity and heritage crop which was indigenous to Gurez, the authorities advised the public in general and mentioned villagers in particular to avoid the practice of its early harvesting.

The order, by Tehsildar Gurez, Tariq Ahmad Bhat, states, “Failure to do so shall tantamount to willful negligence and action as warranted under the rules will be initiated against the defaults and violators.”
