Four army soldiers, including a Major, were killed in a gunfight along the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district on Tuesday. Two militants were also killed in the gunfight, army said.
A defence spokesman confirmed the deaths of an army Major and three soldiers in the gunfight which he said broke out after army foiled an infiltration bid in Gurez.
He identified the slain army men as Major KP Rane, Havaldar Jamie Singh, Havaldar Vikramjeet and rifleman Mandeep of 36 RR.
The spokesman said that two militants were killed in the ongoing operation.
Earlier, senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bandipora, Zulfikar Ahmad said the firing started at around 1 am.
"Ceasefire violation in Gurez," said the deputy commissioner Bandipora Shahid Iqbal Choudhary on Twitter.
