Srinagar: Two Lashkar-e-Taiba militants, including a local militant, were killed in a brief shootout close to Rangreth outskirts of Srinagar on Monday, police said.

The militants were killed on the roadside, while scores of locals assembled at the encounter site soon after the incident. The area witnessed protests and pitched battles after the shootout. Police said that the militants were killed in a brief shootout and termed it a chance encounter.

“Encounter has started at Rangret area of Srinagar. Srinagar Police on job. Further details shall follow. @JmuKmrPolice,” Kashmir Zone Police Tweeted soon after the encounter. After a brief interval of time, police said that two militants were killed in a shootout. “SrinagarEncounterUpdate: 2 unidentified terrorists killed. Search going on. Further details shall follow. @JmuKmrPolice.”

Police identified one of the slain militants as Adil Ahmad Wani of Shopian. Police said another slain is a Pakistani militant whose identity is being ascertained.

Later a police statement said: “Based on specific input regarding movement of terrorists in general area of Rangreth, surprise naka checking points were established tactically by Srinagar Police in the area.

During naka checking at one such naka manned by a small team of Srinagar Police, two suspected persons on noticing the police party fired indiscriminately upon them. However, the fire was effectively retaliated, leading to a brief encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were neutralised on spot,” police said.

“One of the killed terrorist has been identified as Aadil Ahmad Wani son of Bashir Ahmad Wani resident of Daramdoora Shopian (a Pakistan trained “A” category terrorist) while as another killed terrorist as per the credible sources is a foreign terrorist, yet same is being further ascertained. Both the killed terrorists were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit LeT.”

“As per police records, both the killed terrorists were involved in several terror crime cases and civilian atrocities and played a key role in number of recent killings in Srinagar City. On 04/03/2020, terrorist Aadil along with his associates fired upon Police Party of Police Post Warpora Sopore in which 1 Police Personnel Wajahat Asadullah was martyred & a civilian Shaban Wagay was killed.

Besides the killed terrorist was also involved in several grenade attacks on Police/SF establishments including grenade attack at Bus Stand Sopore in which 19 civilians were injured, grenade attack at Police Post Bus Stand Sopore in which 2 Police Personnel were injured.”

“Arms & ammunition including 2 AK rifles and other incriminating materials were recovered from the site of the encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes,” Police said

“In this connection police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitised and cleared off of all the explosive materials, if any, Police said. “IGP Kashmir appreciated police team for conducting successful operation without any collateral damage.”

They pelted stone on deployed security forces. The traffic was disrupted.

However, traffic resumed after protestors were disrupted by police. The business establishments in the area were also closed.
