Civilian shot dead in Srinagar

Srinagar: Within just twenty-four hours of the killing of a policeman at Batamaloo, militants Monday evening shot dead a civilian in downtown Srinagar.

The deceased identified as Muhammad Ibrahim Khan, resident of Astengoo Bandipora was working as a salesman at a shop at Bohri kadal area in Srinagar. The shop is owned by a minority community popular businessman.

   

“Khan was fired upon by the terrorists from point blank range when he was boarding a vehicle,” a senior police officer told Greater Kashmir. The officer said Khan had received bullets in chest. “He was moved to premier SMHS hospital but succumbed to his injuries”

The incident created panic in the area while people rushed away from the spot of incident to safer places. Soon after the incident a massive hunt was launched to nab the attackers. The operation was underway when this report was being filed.

Police in a statement said: “Today at about 2010hrs Srinagar Police received information about a terror crime incident at Borikadal area of Srinagar. Senior police officers reached at the terror crime spot,” police said.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that terrorists had fired upon one civilian identified as Mohammad Ibrahim Khan son of Ghulam Mohammad Khan resident of Astengoo Bandipora at Borikadal area of Srinagar,” police said. “In this terror incident, he had sustained critical gunshot injuries and was immediately shifted to nearby hospital for the treatment where he succumbed to his injuries.”

“Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the circumstances which lead to this terror crime. Area has been cordoned off and search in the area is going on,” it added.

This is second incident of killing in Srinagar in last 24 hours. On Sunday evening a policeman was shot dead by the militants in SD Colony area of Batamaloo.

Monday’s incident took place three days after militants fled after exchange of fire in near SKIMS Bemina.
