Srinagar: Senior Congress leader and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday said that the Delimitation Commission was “tailor-made right from the beginning” and was constituted in a way that it made way for certain political parties to be its constituent members.

“Whenever any such Commission meetings used to take place earlier, irrespective of whether a party had a legislator or not, parties used to be asked to provide their feedback. Whichever Delimitations have happened in J&K till now, the system was such that a letter would be written to the party president for feedback” Azad said while speaking to media persons at Doda.

He said under the current dispensation at the Centre, “ it has happened for the first time that only the parties who have Lok Sabha MPs were made associate members. “Only two parties had Lok Sabha members, i.e BJP and NC. It ( meeting criteria) was tailor-made that only parties with Lok Sabha MPs can be associate members of the Commission. Had the criteria been that of Rajya Sabha then in that case both PDP and Congress would have also made it the meeting” said Azad.

“I would congratulate NC that they went for the meeting as they had earlier said no to it. I am hopeful that NC does a representation of all the parties in the Commission so that it is not a one-sided affair” Azad said, adding that in the all-party meeting chaired by PM Modi earlier this year, Azad had stressed that the process of delimitation exercise must be “balanced”.
