Covid19: 4 deaths, 98 new cases in J&K

Srinagar: Four people lost life to COVID19 on Monday, a reminder that the fatal disease continues to take toll in many of the infected individuals. Another 98 fresh cases were reported in the J&K, the UT Government said. Official media bulletin on COVID19 today said that four deaths due to COVID19 took place in the past 24 hours. All the deaths were reported from Kashmir division.

The death toll of the viral disease in J&K reached 4436 with these casualties, 2260 of these in Kashmir division. As per the data, three of the deceased individuals belonged to district Srinagar while the fourth one was from Budgam district. District Srinagar has reported 849 casualties due to SARS-CoV2 infection till date, the highest among all districts of Kashmir division.

Dr Naveed Nazir Shah, head department of Chest Medicine at GMC Srinagar said that deaths due to COVID19 have reduced over the past few months and vaccination was a major factor in bringing about this change. He however said that people should remember that COVID19 could still prove fatal and there was a need to protect the high risk individuals, those with existing diseases and the immune-compromised. He said the hospital routinely admitted scores of people with severe disease. “The pandemic is not yet over and lowering of guard could prove dangerous,” he said.

Dr Saleem Tak, Medical Superintendent Chest Diseases Hospital Srinagar said the hospital had 16 admitted patients and four of those were in Intensive Care Units. In DRDO COVID19 Hospital Khanmoh, the Medical Superintendent Dr Rashid Parra said, an equivalent number of patients were admitted and two of the patients were in ICU.

Dr Shah said COVID19 admissions had dropped over the past few months but there were phases when clusters of cases, many of them severely sick, were admitted to hospitals.

The official bulletin issued on Monday said, 98 cases were reported with 33451 tests carried out in 24 hours. The positive percentage of samples today was 0.29, higher than the positive percentage of 0.19 reported over the third week of October. Currently, there are 899 active cases of COVID19 in J&K, 801 of these in Kashmir division and 461 in district Srinagar alone. District Srinagar had 56 new cases today, while 10 of those found positive today were from district Baramulla.

On Monday, 81657 doses of COVID19 vaccination doses were administered across the UT. Over 12500 of these doses were delivered in badly affected Srinagar district.
