Srinagar: Pointing out at earlier statement of National Conference leadership, wherein it had said that participation in the Delimitation Commission “would tantamount to accepting the events of August 5”, Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone on Saturday asked the NC leadership to explain how “it was an endorsement to abrogation of the Article 370 then and not now”.

In a Tweet, the Peoples Conference president put out a statement made earlier by the NC that participation in proceedings of Delimitation Commission would be tantamount to accepting August 5 decisions and it is unwilling to do so.

“Please at least have the courtesy to show even some pretense and explain how it was tantamount to endorsement then and not now. Digital world. Digital proof. Chit bhi meri patt be meri won’t work. Era of multiple speeches Srinagar and Delhi— in multiple places is over,” Lone tweeted. In another Tweet, Lone asked NC what compelled it to participate in proceedings of the Delimitation Commission.

“These are the utterances of Dr Farooq Abdullah. What changed between then and now for the NC to now participate. Is it not tantamount to endorsing August 5 decisions now?”. There is a limit on monopoly on morality. Please at least have the courtesy to show even some pretense and explain how it was tantamount to endorsement then and how it is not tantamount to endorsement now, “ the party Tweeted.

Meanwhile, earlier PC senior vice president Abdul Gani Vakil took a dig at the NC and while referring to the NC’s statement in May wherein they asserted that participating in the Delimitation process would be tantamount to endorsing August 5 decisions, Vakil asked the NC leadership to explain what changed in six months for them to change their publicly stated stance on this issue, said a statement.

“If something was wrong in May, how could it be right in December? The NC must come out clean and explain the reasons for change of heart. What has changed in Kashmir for them to now deem this exercise legitimate? History is a testament to the fact that the NC has exploited the sentiment on Autonomy and Article 370 while in reality, they have not been able to restore anything that was gradually taken away from J&K’s special status.

Accusing the NC leadership of “duplicity”, Vakil said that the NC has a “history of speaking one language in Srinagar and another in Delhi”.

“The NC has been allowed the political space by the BJP to say one thing in Kashmir and another in Delhi. We are not at all surprised by these developments as we have known all along that the NC has a secret pact with the centre,” Vakil said.

He further stated that the NC will be accountable and answerable to the people of Kashmir on the result of the Delimitation exercise. “Whatever will come out of this exercise, the NC will be a party to it. We have seen in the past delimitation exercises as well how constituencies were tailor-made for the NC. We are seriously concerned about a repeat of what has happened in the past. The NC must sincerely explain the reasons for their participation and assure the people of J&K that this exercise will be fair and transparent”, Vakil added.
