Kashmir higher reaches freeze, cold conditions in plains

Srinagar: As the Western Disturbance, a phenomenon that brings change in weather, moved away from Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, there was a significant drop in night temperatures in higher reaches, while plains also remained under a grip of cold conditions.

Gulmarg, that recorded over 5 inches of snow on Friday, witnessed a minimum temperature of minus 3 degrees Celsius on Saturday, while the nearby Automatic Weather Station at Kongdoori showed a minimum temperature reading of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius.

   

Pahalgam tourist destination, which also serves as a base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 0.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday night.

From minus 8.6 degrees Celsius on Friday, Drass, in Ladakh, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 11.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday night.

Summer capital Srinagar recorded a low of 5.5 degrees Celsius, up from 5.2 degrees Celsius on Friday night.

The night temperature in Qazigund, which remained under cloud cover, settled at a low of 6.2 degrees Celsius, compared to Friday night’s 5.2 degrees Celsius.

The minimum in Kupwara, in north Kashmir, went down from 4.8 degrees Celsiuson Friday night to settle at 3.1 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag town in south registered a low of 5.2 degrees Celsius.

Jammu city recorded 11.7 degrees Celsius, Katra 11.8 degrees Celsius, Batote 5.7 degrees Celsius, Banihal 6.6 degrees Celsius and Bhaderwah 4.6 degrees Celsius as the Saturday night’s lowest temperatures.

Meanwhile, Meteorological Department has predicted of mostly dry weather in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh till 15th November.
