Kulgam encounter: Militant killed, another trapped

Srinagar: One unidentified militant has been killed in an ongoing anti-militancy operation in Kulgam district of south Kashmir while one more militant is believed to be trapped.

The operation was launched by J&K Police, Rashtriya Rifles and Central Reserve Police Force after specific information about the presence atleast two militants in Chawalgam area of Kulgam.

   

A senior police officer said that soon after the area was cordoned off for searches, announcements were made appealing hiding militants to surrender.

“As soon searches were started, hiding militants opened fire,” the officer said, adding in retaliatory fire one militant was killed. “Another one is still trapped,” the officer said.

After the killing of the militant police Tweeted “#KulgamEncounterUpdate: 01 unidentified #terrorist killed. #Operation in progress. Further details shall follow. @JmuKmrPolice,” police said in another Tweet.

Earlier on 21 October, two militants were killed after a brief shootout in Kulgam. Police had said that after specific inputs about militant movement, a joint team of the police, Army and paramilitary forces established a checkpoint on the Devsar-Sopat road.

“We signalled one of the vehicles to stop. However, its occupants resorted to indiscriminate firing,” police had said, adding two terrorists were killed in retaliatory firing. Police had identified them as Gulzar Ahmad Reshi, district commander of the Lashkar-e-Toiba and Imran Wani. Police heads said the militants were behind the killing of Raja Reshi and Joginder Reshi, two labourers from Bihar, at Wanpoh Kulgam on October 17.
