Militant killed in ongoing Srinagar encounter

Srinagar: An unidentified militant was killed in an ongoing operation in Bemina area of Srinagar Wednesday evening, police said.

Police said that an encounter broke out in Bemina after J&K Police and Central Reserve Police Force cordoned off the area after inputs of the presence of militants. “As cordon was being laid, militants opened fire,” police said. “The fire retaliated and in ensuing gunfight one terrorist was killed,”

“Encounter has started at Srinagar. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow.” Kashmir Zone Police said in a Tweet soon after the encounter broke out.

Later in another Tweet, police said one militant was killed. “SrinagarEncounterUpdate: 01 unidentified terrorist killed. 01 AK rifle alongwith ammunition recovered. Search going on. Further details shall follow,” Police said.

Reliable sources in police said that an accomplice of the slain militant might have fled taking advantage of the darkness. “ A cordon has been aligned and more reinforcement has arrived at the spot,” sources said, adding that massive searches were underway.

It may be mentioned that last week there was an exchange of fire between militants and security forces in the Bemina area. However, militants had escaped after the shootout.
