Srinagar: Militants Wednesday evening shot dead a civilian in Eidgah area of Srinagar while a massive hunt was launched to track down the attackers, police said.
Police identified the slain as Rouf Ahmad Khan (45) son of late Muhammad Shafi Khan of Merjanpora Safakdal. Khan was a real estate broker by profession.
“Terrorists fired upon a civilian namely Rouf Ahmad at Merjanpora, Eidgah PS Safakadal Srinagar. The injured was shifted to SMHS hospital where he was declared dead. Case registered, investigation going on. @JmuKmrPolice,” Kashmir Zone Police Tweeted soon after the incident.
Police said that militants whose number is being ascertained opened fire on Khan from point blank range. They said that Khan received three bullets in neck and abdomen. “He was shifted to SMHS hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way,” a senior police officer said.
He said area was under cordon and search operation is underway. Senior officers of police and paramilitary arrived at the spot to take stock of situation.
The incident came 24 hours after militants opened fire on a police party in Soura area of Srinagar.
The police party was led Superintendent of Police, Hazratbal.
Pertinent to mention this year there have been few killing of civilians in Eidgah area. A street hawker from Bihar and a labourer from Uttar Pradesh were killed in two back-to-back attacks by militants in mid-October.
The labourer from UP was also shot dead in Edgah area, besides a policemen.
“At about 1725 hrs, Srinagar Police received information about a terror incident at Merjanpora Safakadal area of Srinagar. Officers attending the crime spot learnt that unidentified terrorists had fired upon a civilian identified as Rouf Ahmad Khan son of Mohd Shafi Khan resident of Merjanpora Safakadal near his house. He received grievous gunshot injuries in this terror incident and was immediately evacuated to nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” police said.
