Srinagar: In the backdrop of Zewan militant attack and killing of two LeT militants in Srinagar, security forces on Tuesday stepped up vigil in the city and elsewhere in Kashmir to prevent any further untoward incident.
Since Tuesday morning, police and paramilitary forces carried out random searches in various parts of Srinagar city including Lal Chowk. Extra barricades were erected to monitor the movement of traffic on city roads.
In Srinagar, armoured vehicles were seen at many places and paramilitary forces were patrolling the streets. The security was beefed up in several areas of Srinagar and more security personnel, along with the flying squads, were deployed in Lal Chowk, Jehangir Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Regal Chowk, TRC Chowk, Polo View and the areas around the city centre.
Reports said security forces conducted surprise checks at many parts of the Srinagar city to keep a check on movement. At some places that included Hari Singh High Street (HSHS),TRC joint parties of police and paramilitary forces were seen frisking pedestrians and checking their belongings thoroughly. At SK Park, Budshah Bridge and Maulana Azad security forces were seen carrying out random frisking.
“Police and security forces increased their presence in Srinagar and elsewhere on Tuesday in the backdrop of yesterday’s attack and encounter,” a senior police officer told Greater Kashmir. “Surveillance too has been increased at a number of places in Kashmir.”
The officer said that security forces were carrying out random checking of vehicles entering Srinagar city and makeshift check posts were set up by police and CRPF.
“Security personnel are alert to thwart any more attacks,” the officer said, adding that security personnel along with flying squads have been deployed in several areas of the city and across Kashmir.
The officer said that joint parties have been carrying speculative CASOs besides frisking vehicles at various place. The additional measures, include surprise check posts and limited Cordon and Search Operations (CASO) in crowded places to keep militants at bay.
The presence of security forces around vital installations in and around the city as well as other district headquarters has been increased, the officer said. One of senior CRPF officials said that they have directed to strengthen and augment the intelligence and security grids in their respective areas for the security of the people. He said that officials of the police and the paramilitary have been directed to maintain close surveillance and track of such elements and bring them to justice as quickly as possible through coordinated measures.
