Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani and Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday defied curfew and tried to reach martyrs' graveyard at Khawjabazar here, but were detained  by police and lodged in Humhama and Nigeen police stations, respectively. The two leaders were later released.

Witnesses said on Wednesday afternoon, Geelani came out of his Hyderpora residence to lead a procession towards martyrs' graveyard at Khawjabazar in Old Srinagar to pay homage to the martyrs of July 13, 1931. However, a heavy contingent of police present outside his residence stopped him and asked him to get into a police vehicle. Police sources said Geelani was lodged in police station Humhama for a few hours and later released and again placed under house arrest.

At 2.30 pm, Mirwaiz also tried to come out of his Nigeen residence to proceed towards the martyrs' graveyard in a procession. He tried to leave his residence from the main entrance gate, but was stopped by the policemen present outside. He, however, showed resistance and later jumped from the boundary wall of his house. Policemen present in strength however stopped him and later asked him to get into a police vehicle.  Mirwaiz was lodged in police station Nigeen for a few hours and later released. He was again placed under house arrest.
