Grand step towards UT status, says Leh hill council chief

Chief executive councilor of the Leh autonomous hill development council Jamyang Tsering Namgyal Friday thanked, among others, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government and governor Satya Pal Malik for granting divisional status to Ladakh.

Addressing a press conference here, Namgyal termed the decision as a “big boon” “a historic step towards fulfillment of developmental and political aspirations” of the people of Ladakh.

This demand has been persistently raised, especially in the past last three months under the present LAHDC, he said, adding that “accord of divisional status to Ladakh would ensure financial and administrative autonomy for the region”. Ladakh would witness an added momentum in every field of development in coming days, Namgyal said, adding that officials of the divisional cadre would also be immensely benefitted from it.

“The grant of divisional status for Ladakh signifies the caring intent of Modi government and it is a grand step forward towards union territory status (for the region),” he said.

Namgyal, on behalf of the LAHDC and its members, greeted the people of Ladakh on this “historic achievement”.

The press conference was also attended by the deputy chairman LAHDC Leh Gyal P Wangyal; executive councilors Tsering Sandup, Mumtaz Hussain, Phuntsog Stanzin; BJP councilors; BJP district president Dorjey Wangchuk and some BJP workers.

Namgyal also thanked MLC Leh Chering Dorjey, advisors to governor, chief secretary BVR Subrahmanyam and former MP Thupstan Chhewang.
