For the people of Marmat, Doda, the winter brings with it a plethora of problems mainly on frequent power cuts.
Even otherwise life is quite tough in the hilly and treacherous areas of Doda and Kishtwar like other inaccessible parts of J&K but bone-chilling winters create havoc here.
The 24X7 electricity for the people of the area is still a dream.
This is even though the resources of the area are exploited to feed not just other parts of J&K but even outside.
“We have to face unscheduled power cuts for hours together almost daily in addition to scheduled curtailment. Even a brief spell of rain, windstorm, or snowfall is enough to snap the supply of electricity. Once gone, it may take days to get restored as most of our areas remain away from sight and do not catch the attention of the authorities concerned. Even during the summer, the situation is not very rosy but the pleasant weather conditions come as a great respite for us. The night cuts however create problems for students as their studies get affected. We wonder whether our areas fit well in Digital India. We urge the concerned authorities to redress our grievance by strengthening power infrastructure in our area and stopping unscheduled power curtailment,” said Muhammad Shafi, a local.
