Jammu: The Village Defence Committees (VDCs) Sunday practiced firing as a part of a strategy to fight militancy in Reasi district.
“Professionally untrained but highly committed for self and community defense against militants, the VDCs equipped with sophisticated arms have proved a stone wall defense against militancy in remote hilly habitations in Jammu zone of J&K,” read a statement issued by Police in Reasi.
Considering it an invaluable asset to the department and a force multiplier for security of the region, SSP ReasiShailender Singh said that they have chalked out a detailed strategy for practice fire for the members of VDCs in Reasi.
“Under this schedule, range classification has been initiated at STC Talwara for the SPOs and members of VDCs Reasi and Katra area,” the statement issued by the Police said.
“For Police sub-division Arnas, the practice fire is also scheduled and started at RudKhad at Arnas. In the Mahore and Chassana area practice fire for VDC members has been planned at SildharMahore,” the official statement said.
Under this exercise, it said, “All VDC members and SPOs are coming at the nearest firing butts and checking their firing capabilities after cleaning and zeroing their weapons.
“VDC members are swarming on firing butts with zest and zeal and are excited to check their capabilities in firing with their .303 weapons.”
SSP Reasi has scheduled one week to help nearly 6000 members including 20 women members of district Reasi who are deployed in their own villages for the safety and security of the villagers.
“VDC being a force multiplier are considered as the first response to thwart any nefarious designs of anti-national elements in remote areas,” the statement said.
Singh said, "Since VDCs played a pivotal role in safety and security in the villages, to rejuvenate them it is necessary to exercise and practice the firing by their weapons which can only be done with such exercises from time to time."
He said that Police in Reasi would conduct exercises with the involvement of VDC members of district administration Reasi in future.
