Srinagar: Observing that privatisation of the power sector in Jammu and Kashmir would hit the consumers and traders hard as the tariff would increase manifold, Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) Chairman Hakeem Yaseen Saturday demanded rollback of the move at the earliest.

A statement of PDF issued here quoted Yaseen as saying that privatisation of power would have serious ramifications on J&K’s economy and leave the consumers at mercy of the sweet will of private players.

Voicing concern over the move to privatise the power sector in J&K, Yaseen said that the reports suggest that the tariff after privatisation would witness a 200 percent hike as the per-unit cost for the consumer would increase to Rs 8 from the current Rs 2 to Rs 3.

He said the Centre should not take the hilly J&K at par with other union territories while privatising the power sector of the country.

Yaseen said that the move to privatise the power sector had already evoked opposition from the All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) and the Jammu and Kashmir Power Engineers and Employees Coordination Committee (JKPEECC) too had expressed resentment again any such move.
