Rajouri: Multiple incidents of spotting of aerial objects resembling drones have put security forces and agencies on their toes with a fresh ‘Drone Alert’ sounded in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch.

The alert has been issued after multiple incidents of spotting suspected drone-like aerial objects in areas located near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch’s Mendhar subdivision.

Official sources said that the first spotting of the suspected aerial object was reported three days ago after one such object was seen flying near an area along the LoC.

“The suspicious object was spotted by very few people including security force personnel which created an illusion of authenticity of this spotting,” official sources said.

However, they said that on Friday evening, a similar spotting came to the fore from villages of Mendhar following which it was established that a drone was flying over villages in Mendhar.

“On Friday evening, when some villagers were busy in their routine work at around 6:30 pm, a drone-like object was seen moving over the area and people in Souiyan, Lanjiote, Dhargaloon and other villages near the LoC in Balakote sector of Mendhar saw it,” the official sources said.

They said that the object with blinking lights indicates that it was an aerial object and possibly a drone.

“Army and Police also launched massive searches in these villages of Mendhar soon after receiving the information of spotting of the aerial object,” the official sources said.

They said that after these multiple incidents of drone spotting in the areas close to LoC, a fresh alert of aerial vehicles commonly referred to as ‘Drone Alert’ had been issued wherein all the security installations and camps had been asked to be on high alert and maintain strict aerial vigil to thwart any Jammu Technical Airport-like strike using the drone.

“There are multiple reasons for which such aerial objects are used and these range from dropping of a consignment of arms and ammunition, aerial surveillance, and checking alertness level of troops towards aerial vehicles,” the official sources said. “The weapon dropping using drones is not a new thing now and cannot be ruled in any area.”

They said that all the field agencies and ground troops were on high alert after these multiple incidents and security agencies and the security forces were on their toes.
