Deputy chief minister Kavinder Gupta on Thursday said there is nothing wrong in the demand for a CBI-led investigation into the rape-and-murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua.
"It's good if people are demanding CBI Inquiry into Kathua rape and murder incident. They should demand CBI inquiry. The matter is in the Supreme Court now that will take the future course of action," Gupta told news agency CNS.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is learnt to have turned down BJP ministers' demand for a CBI inquiry.
Gupta also said that he was misquoted by the media on the day he took oath as deputy chief minister. He had said the crime "was a small matter" the media had blown out of proportion.
"I didn't say it is a minor issue. I said those involved in the heinous crime should be punished," he said.
Gupta said he will not apologise for his comments.
"BJP is a disciplined party which sought resignations from Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga who participated in a rally," he said. However, he defended participation of Rajiv Jasrotia, Ganga and Singh for participating in the rally supporting the accused.
"They are elected representatives of people and can attend any rally on the request of people," he said.
