KU: Who failed whom

The Kashmir University exams were held in the year 2016 and it took almost a year to evaluate the papers. Ultimately the results are ‘a big failure’ .The results of Ist semester batch 2016 were declared on 19th of January 2017, and left the students deeply frustated. As per the recent reports coming from Kashmir University 7000 students have failed. The students staged a protest and demanded a probe into the matter.

The Kashmir University ascribed it to students not filling the OMR sheets accurately. In the recent KU notification the controller of exams have stated a number of reasons behind the result failure.

Some of the candidates have not darkened the respective circles on the OMR sheets rather have put a dot or have encircled the respective answer or have ticked the respective answer which couldn’t be read by the machine and, therefore the marks of the objective paper could not be

determined, means not added to the theory marks. Such OMR sheets are being identified and shall be assessed again by the OMR machine after correcting the mistakes committed by the students.

Other category of students whose result has been shown as re-appear or LO have not darkened the respective circles on the OMR sheet in the space where Roll No had to be written. They have instead written their Roll No in figures, rather than darkening of circles, which could not be read by OMR machine.

Another category of students has not mentioned the series of Question Papers on the OMR sheet, therefore, respective answer key could not be applied to assess the marks obtained by the students.

Furthermore, the result of some of the candidates has been declared as LO/re-appear whose practical awards were not submitted till date.

But if we dig a bit deeper we find some other people responsible as well. Students must not be held responsible alone, the concerned authorities are equally responsible for the failure. The students were facing the OMR sheets for the first time and most of the students alleged that the instructions were not made fully understandable, and clear to them the way it should have been. Some students are not even aware that the OMR sheets are checked by machine scanner.

The most important point to be highlighted here is that on every OMR sheet there is invigilator’s signature that guarantees that the OMR sheet is correctly filled. Now who is responsible!

Furthermore there are chances that students have filled their second semester OMR sheets the same way because they were promoted to another semester without knowing the results of exams held. What to expect from the second semester results as well?

If we talk about another failure that is semester system failure which also added to the depression level of students. Promotion of students without knowing the results has an adverse impact. Delhi University introduced semester system to change the structure which will bring innovation and efficiency in the system. It was aimed to provide opportunity and develop the level of students. But again here in Kashmir it proved to be a failure. It was just to halve the study load, but it doubled because neither the results are out in time nor the semester system is properly maintained. If we remember the situation that we witnessed recently that before combining 5th and 6th semester there wasn’t any fresh batch going for KU entrance. The authorities seem to be in deep slumber but it cost a student a lot. The authorities should ponder over its drawbacks because on the 11th hour it is really depressing for students to cope up things which lead to such failures.

Adopting a trend should not be just because some other state/country is adopting. Every system or policy should be maintained properly and not be taken for granted. On a serious note, annual system was far better than semester system and if efforts are made to develop annual system, it can really do wonders. It is indispensable for the concerned authorities to look into this serious matter.
