Abdul Majeed Lone, a farmer, was content with his life after the family recently shifted to his newly constructed house in Hawoora village of district Kulgam. On Saturday, all his dreams were shattered when he heard that his younger son, 19-year-old Irshad Ahmad died after sustaining bullet injuries in his abdomen. His elder son, Zahid Ahmad, 22, who tried to save Irshad, his younger brother, is battling for his life in a Srinagar hospital.

Irshad was declared dead at the hospital while his elder brother, who has fire arm injuries in both his legs, is undergoing treatment at the Srinagar hospital.

As per witnesses, Irshad and Zahid were fired at by the army men from a point blank range. "The army men caught hold of Irshad and started beating him with gun butts. In the meantime, his brother Zahid who was working in his paddy field rushed towards the village as people raised hue and cry," said a relative of Lone. "On seeing his brother, he ran towards him and tried to save him from the wrath of army men. The army men however opened fire and Irshad fell and bled to death."  He added that the army men later dragged Zahid and fired at his legs, critically injuring him.

Lone's two sons had invested a lot of time and hard work to construct the house. The duo had also left their studies, taking up labor work to financially help their poor family.

"After shouldering the coffin of his younger son, Lone will now leave to attend to his elder son in the Srinagar hospital," said Abdul Salam, a family relative. "Zahid was still unconscious and unaware of his brother's death."  As per doctors at Bone and Joint Hospital Srinagar, he has severe fractures in tibia of both his legs.

Their mother, Raja Begum, is in a state of shock, unable to utter a word. "Both their sons did everything to make their parents happy. The family had recently shifted to their new house though it is still under construction. Within no time all their hopes are dashed," lamented Ghulam Rasool, a close relative.
