The J&K Legislative Assembly Thursday cleared a bill to double the salary and allowances of legislators while passing another bill to enhance salary of Chief Minister and Ministers.
Under the bill, the Government has increased salary and allowances of MLAs/MLCs from Rs 80000 to Rs 160000, per month.
The Government has also increased salary of Chief Minister and Ministers and is amending rules to enhance their allowances.
Once rules are cleared by the Government, the Chief Minister will get Rs 180000 from Rs 90000 while Ministers will get Rs 170000 from Rs 85000.
The Ministers of State will get Rs 160000, sources said.
According to financial memorandum of the bill, the increase in salaries and allowances of lawmakers and Ministers would put a burden of Rs 12 crore per year, on state exchequer.
"The enhancement in the salaries and allowances of members and the ministers would involve an additional expenditure to the tune of Rs 12 crore per annum approximately," the financial memorandum reads.
