Leh highway, Mughal Road closed for traffic

Rains in plains and snowfall in hills on Thursday brought temperature down by four degrees in Srinagar, and the Met department predicted erratic weather in the next 24 hours.

MeT officials said Gulmarg recorded 2.4mm of rainfall and light snowfall in nearby Kongdoori area of the ski-resort. They said that Kupwara recorded 2.5mm of rainfall, while predicting light rain, snowfall at most of places in Kashmir in the next 24 hours. 

Srinagar recorded a maximum of 16.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 6.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday.  On Wednesday, the minimum temperature was 22 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in Gulmarg was 8.3 degrees Celsius and minimum 4.6 degrees Celsius.

The arterial Srinagar-Jammu highway is open for traffic but Srinagar-Leh highway and Mughal Road have been closed.

The 434 km-long Srinagar-Leh highway was closed on Thursday afternoon following snowfall along the Zojila pass. Superintendent of police (SP) traffic rural Muzaffar Ahmed Shah told Greater Kashmir the highway was closed for traffic as a precautionary measure.
