Messy Uri road irks commuters

The Srinagar-Uri highway is in a shambles and the state administration has failed to restore it, local residents say.

The entire road is dotted with potholes, making the journey cumbersome for thousands of commuters every day, especially between the Nanak Bhawan and Khanpora areas.

Local traders and transporters say they are suffering due to the pathetic condition of the road.

Locals say the concerned authorities have not macadamised the road for the past more than a year.

“Our trade has badly suffered because of low footfall due to poor condition of the road,” they said.

With the opening of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road in 2005, the then authorities claimed that the entire road stretch from Srinagar to Kamanpost Uri will be developed on modern lines “so that a new era of tourism and prosperity will be witnessed in the area”.  However, decades on, the authorities have failed to keep the promise.
