Militant killed in Shopian: Police

Shopian, June 23: A local militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Shirmal village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday, police said, adding that a pistol was recovered from the killed militant.

The killed militant was identified as Sajad Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Qadir Bhat, a resident of Badigam Aaishmuqam village of district Anantnag.

   

A police official said that a cordon and search operation turned into an encounter. He said that the forces comprising columns of army, CRPF and police surrounded a strip of Shirmal (Heff) village, some 14 kms from Shopian town, after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

He said that a pistol and a grenade were recovered from the killed militant.

A police spokesperson said that the militant was given an opportunity to surrender. He said that during the search operation one hideout was busted and destroyed.

According to the spokesperson, the killed militant was active since September 2020 and was associated with the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen.
