A militant was killed in an encounter in Kazinag Dhar area near the Line of Control in Uri in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said. More militants are holed up in the area, a police official said.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Kashmir Range), Gareeb Das, said "it seems a group of militants infiltrated into this side at least four or five days back and have been hiding in the area."
"A contact was established with the gunmen late Tuesday night, triggering an encounter. Special Operations Group of Police and army's 32 RR engaged the militants in the gun-battle in which one militant has been killed so far," he said.
Police sources said the number of militants is three to four or four to five. "Since militants are firing from different locations, it seems their number is fairly good," they said.
A police official said the identity of the slain militant is being ascertained.
Army's Srinagar-based spokesman, Lt Colonel Joshi said they received an input about presence of militants in the area. "It is not an infiltration. They were present in the area. The operation is on," he said.
Meanwhile, a gunbattle started in Baramulla's Rafiabad area, DIG Das said. "Details are awaited," he said.
