Election officials on Saturday received 50 nominations for the third phase of urban local bodies' elections in northern Kashmir.
For the SoporeMuncipal Council, which has the highest number of electors and wards, not a single nomination was filed in 14 of the 21 wards. Of the eight nominations received, seven were filed by BJP candidates and one by an independent candidate.
The Uri Municipal Committee received the highest number of nominations, 32, for its 13 wards that have a total of 3552 voters. While 13 candidates belong to Congress, 14 are independent.
For Hajin Municipal Committee, which has 13 wards and 7304 electors, 10 nominations were received for the third phase, all by Congress candidates. The process of filing nominations for the first and second phases of elections concluded on Thursday. For the second phase, a total of 79 Candidates filed nominations for 46 wards of four Municipal Committees with 19393 electors across northern Kashmir. A total of 160 candidates filed nominations for Baramulla Municipal Council and three Municipal Committees of Bandipora, Handwara and Kupwara in northern Kashmir on Tuesday.
