Srinagar: The residents living around Cement Kadal area of Noorbagh here have urged the authorities to fence sides of the bridge to prevent suicides at the spot.
The residents said that amid growing cases of suicides in Kashmir bridges across Srinagar are the primary points where such incidents take place. “Cement Kadal is one of these. Last week a 17-year-old youth from Kupwara committed suicide after jumping into the river Jhelum from Cement Kadal,” they said.
“In recent months many suicide attempts have taken place in the area. Sometimes bystanders intervene and sometimes there is no one to save people. In past also there have been many deaths related to suicide from this bridge,” said Parvaiz Ahmed a local form Noorbagh area.
The residents said that in May another person died of suicide at Cement Kadal. The locals said that even after reaching out to authorities regarding the fencing of the bridge, no solid step has been taken.
“These incidents are taking a heavy toll on the mental health of the locals here. Authorities should not take these things lightly and take measures to prevent suicides at Cement Kadal,” said Nazir Ahmed, another local.
The locals said that the fenceless bridge is also fatal for vehicles that can slip over the bridge without any protective fence. The locals of the area appealed to the authorities to fence the bridge so that lives can be saved.
