Srinagar: Residents of Syed Hyder Colony in Hyderpora locality here on Thursday appealed to the Divisional Commissioner to direct concerned authorities for removing encroachment from public path in the area.

In their complaint to the Divisional Commissioner, the locals said that a couple of residents of Naid Mohalla Hyderpora locality have blocked an age-old public thoroughfare, pathway leading to Syed Hyder Colony, and adjoining graveyard of more than 30 families. The locality is situated behind Ziarat Syed Hyder (RA) Hyderpora.

“The 16-feet wide thoroughfare was clandestinely reduced to six-feet with incessant encroachments on the erstwhile irrigation canal and pathway running alongside it over the years on either side of the canal,” it reads.

“Even as the affected inhabitants have been crying for justice since long, none of the authorities including Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Its BOCA, Revenue Department and concerned Police didn’t took cognisance of the complaints and note of the unlawful occupation of the pathway and the irrigation canal,” they said.

They said while the Irrigation Canal was converted into a drain by concerned MLA out of CDF, providing wider space for the public to pass through the lane, “the unscrupulous persons encroached upon the widened space too.”

“Emboldened by the indifference shown by authorities and their inaction in the matter, some people have now erected iron gates to completely block the thoroughfare,” they said.

In their appeal to the Divisional Commissioner, they said, “We firmly believe that your good-calf will take note of this high-handedness by a few vicious elements and get the way cleared for the general public.”
