Jammu: Ikkjutt Jammu President Ankur Sharma Wednesday asked the Centre to take the entire nation into confidence about the 17-day gunfight in Mendhar-Surankote areas in Poonch district.

A statement of Ikkjutt issued here said that addressing a news conference, Sharma said, “We waited for the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to inform the nation about the situation in Poonch while he was in J&K but that didn’t happen.”

“Developments in Poonch can’t be taken lightly. Security forces have suffered heavy casualties. Anti-militancy operation has entered its 17th day yet nobody knows what type of security challenges exist in the area. The area is 10 to 15 km from the Line of Control. Let the government clarify if the forces are confronting a Fidayeen attack or facing a Kargil-like situation,” Sharma said. He alleged that the government was “trying to treat an issue involving national security through political maneuvers”.

Sharma said that till the militants hiding in the dense Nar Khas forests at Bhata Dhurian were tracked, they would pose security threat to the strategically-crucial roads - Bhimbar Gali, Dhera Ki Gali, and Krishna Ghati besides Mughal Road, Poonch city and 120 Brigade Headquarters.

He warned that the delay, dithering or hiding the gravity of the situation could prove costly for the country.
