Traffic chaos prevails on Jammu-Pathankot highway

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Vijaypur area of Jammu province Sunday affected vehicular traffic on the busy Jammu-Pathankot highway for hours together.

A witness told Greater Kashmir that since early morning, one tube of a six-km-long stretch of the highway, which connects Jammu and Kashmir with other states, was closed for all types of vehicles in view of the PM’s rally. All along the other tube, the witness said, all incoming and outgoing vehicles were allowed to ply while it was being used for parking purposes also, leading to chronic traffic jams that lasted for hours.

Hundreds of buses and light motor vehicles from Jammu and Kathua sides and carrying Bharatiya Janata Party supporters towards the venue of PM’s rally in Vijaypur were parked all along the highway, hitting the normal movement of traffic severely.

Even as a traffic police official said they had earmarked parking spaces for buses and light vehicles for the PM’s rally, witnesses said the traffic police failed to manage vehicular movement especially after the Prime Minister ended his speech at around 2pm. “The real chaos happened at end of PM’s speech, when people rushed towards their vehicles and ended up blocking all roads for several hours,” said Rahul, who was stuck in a traffic jam.

He said three ambulances were also stuck in the jam while thousands of commuters faced a lot of inconvenience.
