Tribute to a Teacher

"The mediocre teacher tells, The good teacher explains, The superior teacher demonstrates and The great teacher inspires" Edward Arthur Ward

On 9th August – 2017, Professor Salim Iqbal, Head Division of Veterinary Physiology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry (SKUAST-Kashmir) left for heavenly abode after a prolonged illness. To Him we belong and to Him is our return.

Dr Salim Iqbal spent his entire life fully devoted and committed to uplift of Veterinary Profession. Besides imparting knowledge of Veterinary Physiology to hundreds of students, he instilled a sense of professional ethics in their minds. He always considered it a noble undertaking and a professional obligation to transform his students into fearless and selfless veterinarians. As mentioned by Dr Pervaiz Reshi (Animal Scientist, KVK Ganderbal) in his tribute to Dr Salim Iqbal, he would never bore his students. His lecture used to be a good blend of science, literature, politics and art. His unique style of cracking jokes always added beauty and spice to his lectures. He used to care for the students welfare. He was a hope, an inspiration, a character and a force to reckon. His contribution towards building Veterinary Faculty into an institution of present day reputation is immense and shall be remembered for good. His role as longest serving President of Veterinary Scientists Association will be unforgettable. His style of working will be an inspiration for the generations (teachers) to come. In nutshell, he was a great teacher and an able leader. His departure has created a vacuum in the faculty and surely will be missed by students and the staff.

Dr Salim Iqbal's dream of having a separate Veterinary University in Kashmir wasn't only emotional but quite logical and rational in a sense that it could be a single University across India to address the livestock health and production related issues in cold and temperate agro-geo-climatic conditions. His love and respect for the saints of valley compelled him to name his dream University as Sheikh-ul-Alam University of Veterinary Sciences. His struggle from pillar to post in this regard is unforgettable. He was a one man army in making his dream a reality. He was a member of the high-level committee constituted by the Government for the said purpose.

The biggest tribute to this great teacher in Veterinary profession would be to pursue whole-heartedly and more vigorously for separate Veterinary University in Kashmir. The scientific community has to switch gears to saddle the responsibilities of contributing to sustainable social development through livestock sector. They have to ensure professional integrity, and maintain highest academic standards for which he dedicated his whole life. In addition, considering his stylish and polished oratory skills and the time and efforts he put in for the professional cohesiveness, not bad if faculty members float a proposal to Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-Kashmir to name the under-construction auditorium in the faculty premises in his name – Salim Iqbal Auditorium- so that his contributions are remembered for ever.

May Allah bless his soul and give patience to the bereaved family (Ameen).
